MANCHESTER, N.H. (AP) — Police say a 2-year-old girl was attacked by a homeless woman at a supermarket in Manchester, N.H., for no apparent reason.

Krystan Lambert says she had her arms full, a cart full of groceries and two children with her at the Market Basket: a boy she was babysitting and her daughter, Sonya. They were walking out of the store at about 2 p.m. Thursday when a woman approached, trying to hit her daughter.

Lambert said her daughter was on the ground crying and the woman was swinging at her. Other shoppers and store workers came to help and police later arrested the woman, identified as 48-year-old Lorraine Augustine.

Police said before Augustine was pulled off of the child, she “allegedly removed the child’s snow boot and struck her with it.” Police said Augustine “has had many prior contacts with our agency.” They did not elaborate.

Augustine was arraigned on assault charges and held on $10,000 bail.

Lambert said her daughter had a cut mouth and bruises.
