FALMOUTH — Applications are still available for several open seats on the town’s Route 100 Vision Committee.
The ad hoc committee, which is charged with developing a long-range vision for a two-mile stretch of Route 100 between the Portland city line and Mountain Road, was authorized by the Town Council in January, but its nine seats haven’t been filled yet.
Over the next two months, Falmouth’s Appointments Committee will interview applicants and fill the committee with a mix of residents and members from existing committees with related goals, said Karen Faber, chairwoman of the Appointments Committee.
“In general, we’ll be looking for a cross-section of people who have interest and stake, so to speak, in Route 100,” she said. “That includes residents, business owners and owners of undeveloped property.”
On Jan. 27, the Town Council voted unanimously to establish an ad hoc committee to help guide the council in coordinating infrastructure projects and land-use regulations for two-mile corridor.
Falmouth’s comprehensive plan, which was adopted in October, identifies Route 100 as one of two commercial growth areas in Falmouth, the other being U.S. Route 1. Soon after the comprehensive plan was adopted, council chairwoman Teresa Pierce gathered the council’s support to make Rt. 100 a priority.
“A broad look at a big stretch of Route 100 really hasn’t been done and it’s time,” Faber said on Tuesday. “It’s a pretty significant opportunity when you think about the intersection of roadways. At Route 1, we have (Interstate) 295, and at Route 100 we have (Interstate) 95. Certainly, from a transportation standpoint, we’re very lucky.”
Faber said the Appointments Committee is in the process of interviewing applicants, but applications are still available from the Town Clerk or on the town’s website. Faber hopes to have the committee filled by the end of April.
“I’m really hoping to see some new faces,” she said. “It’s important to get new ideas and new perspectives. That’s the point of all this.”
