AUGUSTA (AP) — Maine’s highest court has made a rare decision and agreed to hear oral arguments from attorneys who will ask justices to reconsider a Kennebunkport beach access case that could have statewide ramifications.

The Supreme Judicial Court ruled last month that the public does not have the right to use Goose Rocks Beach, saying private property owners control use of the beach to the low-water mark.

The decision reversed a lower court’s ruling and went against town tradition.

Critics of the decision said it could affect public access disputes statewide.

The town and state filed motions this month asking the court to reconsider.
