SCARBOUGH – Maine Senior Guide has announced the speakers for the senior expo scheduled for May 7 at the St. Maximilian Kolbe Hall in Scarborough. The expo is free and open from 9 a.m.-4 p.m.

Beginning at 9 a.m. in the Speaker’s Gallery, financial planning counselors Grey Terry and Pamela Mitchell of HighTower Securities will discuss simple retirement plans, including financial organization, understanding risks and income strategies.

From 10-11 a.m., Susan Kezal, director of community relations at Fallbrook Woods Residential Care and a licensed dietetic technician, will discuss nutritional needs of people in assisted living. She’ll examine real-life situations to provide practical and helpful hints toward promoting the best nutrition for people in independent and assisted living.

Beginning at 11 a.m., Dr. Brian McGrory from Maine Medical Partners – Orthopedics will introduce some of the amazing progress being made in joint replacement. People are having minimally invasive hip replacements and going home the next day. Knee surgeries have changed to the point where recovery is much faster and less painful. Dr. McGrory will discuss expectations and answer questions.

From noon to 1 p.m., Nancy Markowitz from Advantage Home Care will discuss Elder and Family Mediation. Markowitz, a professional mediator, will introduce the process to help families work out conflicts as they arise. Differing options, opinions and family dynamics can make decision-making complicated and difficult at the very time when important issues need to be resolved. Mediation can provide tools and next steps for handling the rough places along the way.

From 1-2 p.m. learn the 10 Secrets to a Successful Life with Dr. Mitchell Vance of HealthSource Portland. Stress can raise havoc with your entire body, impacting the nervous system first. Give your life a boost – mind, body and soul with Dr. Vance’s 10 secrets to success.

From 2-3 p.m. Veterans – Facts about Your VA Burial Benefits, will be presented by Jane Mullen, a Seminar Specialist with Dignity Memorial Funeral Homes. Mullen answers questions like, “Will the government pay for my funeral? What burial benefits are available? Do I qualify? How do I request the benefits that I want?” This program educates veterans and their spouses on the burial benefits offered by the U.S. Dept. of Veterans Affairs, who is eligible to receive these benefits, and how to access them. Seminar guests may request a free Veterans Planning Guide which details 10 important facts about VA Burial Benefits and provides the appropriate forms needed to apply for these benefits.

The Maine Senior Expo is hosted by Maine Senior Guide and Beach Glass Transitions, and sponsored by Current Publishing and Maine Seniors magazine. It’s free, with no registration required, and open from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. at St. Maximilian Kolbe church Hall, Black Point Road, Scarborough.
