PORTLAND — Rita Katherine Caterina, 89, of Portland, died May 15 at Maine Medical Center.
She was born in Portland on Aug. 11, 1924, a daughter of James A. and Winnifred E. Gorrivan Quinn. She attended local schools and was a 1943 graduate of Portland High School. While in high school, she was a horseback rider and member of the equestrian team. She also was a 1945 graduate of Shaw’s Business School.
On Sept. 24, 1949, she married Francis E. Caterina in Portland.
As a young woman, she worked for Sealtest Ice Cream. She later worked for Zayre’s Department Store for several years.
Caterina was a longtime communicant of St. Pius X Church and was a former communicant of the Cathedral for the Immaculate Conception. She was a great cook and enjoyed knitting. She was a generous person who liked to travel.
She was predeceased by her parents; her husband, Francis; five sisters, Eleanor McCarthy, Gertrude O’Donnell, Ann Charlotte Bird, Norma Regina and Jane Golden Joyce; and three brothers, Donald Quinn, John Quinn and William Quinn.
She is survived by two sons, Andrew M. Caterina and wife, Cynthia, and Anthony Caterina, of Portland; a brother, James J. Quinn and wife, Elizabeth, of Portland; eight grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends were invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial May 21. Burial followed at Calvary Cemetery, South Portland.
Arrangements are by Conroy-Tully Crawford Funeral Home, 172 State St., Portland.
