SANFORD — The doggies will have their day Friday, when Sanford’s new dog park opens ”“ complete with a leash-cutting ceremony ”“ at 9:30 a.m.

The new park, a project that began with Edie Lacroix’s English Language Learners class at Sanford Junior High School, is located off William Oscar Emery Drive, in a fenced-in area in an otherwise wooded section adjacent to the Maine Army National Guard Armory.

The project began with an idea in the fall of 2012. In addition to the students, a committee made up of dozen adult supporters pitched in to find the perfect spot where local dogs could run, leash free.

The students put in lots of sweat equity ”“ clearing brush and readying the area for the fence ”“ and raised funds for the park in various ways, including selling popcorn at the county spelling bee. Financial commitments were secured from area businesses and civic organizations as well.

Their theme?

“If we build it, dogs will run.”
