SCARBOROUGH — Brenna Kent drove in the tying run in the fifth inning, then the winning run in the seventh Thursday as top-ranked Scarborough, down by five runs, rallied to defeat eighth-seeded Noble 6-5 in a Western Class A softball quarterfinal.

The Red Storm (17-0) will be home Saturday against fifth-ranked Bonny Eagle in the semifinals.

With the score 5-5, Alyssa Williamson of Scarborough reached on an error to start the bottom of the seventh. Pinch-runner Hannah Ricker then went to third on Megan Murrell’s single before easily scoring on Kent’s fly to right.

The Knights (12-6), behind Melodie Bailey’s two-run homer and Amber Kelly’s two-run single, built a 5-0 lead, but Scarborough scored twice in the fourth before tying the game with a three-run fifth.

Kent’s single to center drove in Brittany Plowman and Williamson to tie it.

CHEVERUS 5, MARSHWOOD 4: Brittany Bell struck out 15 as third-ranked Cheverus (14-3) slipped past 11th-seeded Marshwood (6-12) in a Western Class A quarterfinal at Portland.

Bell gave up six hits, three walks and two earned runs.

After the Hawks scored four runs in the top of the sixth inning, Cheverus retook the lead with two in the bottom of the inning.

CAPE ELIZABETH 2, POLAND 0: Katie Rabasca pitched a two-hitter and Tess Haller scored both runs as the top-seeded Capers (17-0) edged ninth-ranked Poland (9-9) at Cape Elizabeth.

Haller hit a fourth-inning homer to left-center, then scored in the sixth on Mary Perkins’ single.

FRYEBURG ACADEMY 9, LINCOLN ACADEMY 1: Jeannette White allowed four hits, walked three and struck out five as 10th-ranked Fryeburg Academy (9-9) upset second-seeded Lincoln Academy (14-3) in a Western Class B quarterfinal at Newcastle.

Fryeburg scored six runs in the fifth inning to make it 7-0, with Michaela Cooper stroking a two-run double.

Cooper finished with three RBI on two doubles and a single.

Lincoln scored in the seventh when Jen Genthner singled, then scored on a triple by Alyx York.

THORNTON ACADEMY 11, GORHAM 5: Brooke Cross and Taylor Lux homered as second-seeded Thornton Academy (14-3) downed 10th-ranked Gorham (8-10) in a Western Class A quarterfinal at Saco.

Cross and Lux each finished with two RBI and two runs. The Trojans had eight players knock in runs.

Bailey Tremblay of Thornton struck out nine with nine hits and no walks, allowing two earned runs.

GARDINER 4, PRESQUE ISLE 1: Brittany Rollins scattered six hits and struck out 11 to lead the top-seeded Tigers (17-0) over eighth-ranked Presque Isle (12-6) in an Eastern Class B quarterfinal at Gardiner.

The Tigers scored three runs in the second inning when Rollins singled and scored on a fielder’s choice by Nicole Chadwick, and two runs came home following a single by freshman Julia Nadeau. In the fifth, Bri Brochu tripled and scored on a passed ball.

Brochu added a single while Rollins singled twice. Jillian Flynn had a pair of hits for the Wildcats.

Gardiner will be home against Nokomis at 3 p.m. Saturday.

MOUNTAIN VALLEY 10, WINTHROP 1: Too many errors and not enough offense cost the third-seeded Ramblers (12-5), who fell to the sixth-ranked Falcons (13-5) in a Western Class C quarterfinal at Winthrop.

Krissy Doughty of Winthrop struck out nine, and Cat Ouellette had a single and a double. Lily Ouellette and Kaleigh Oberg had the only other hits for the Ramblers.

WELLS 6, GRAY-NEW GLOUCESTER 0: Lauren Bame pitched a four-hit shutout to lead the third-ranked Warriors (14-3) over sixth-seeded Gray-New Gloucester (10-7) in a Western Class B quarterfinal at Wells.

Bame finished with 11 strikeouts and no walks.

Christina LeBlanc and Maddie Taylor scored on a passed ball in the second inning. The Warriors added four runs in the sixth, including RBI singles by Taylor and Kaitlyn Tufts.
