SOUTH PORTLAND — The first City Council vote on an ordinance that would ban tar sands in the city was rescheduled to Wednesday, July 9, at 7 p.m. at the Community Center gymnasium.
The City Council postponed the vote Monday because of a fire and safety hazard posed by the more than 200 members of the public who attended the council’s regularly scheduled meeting at City Hall.
City Council Chambers can seat 96 people.
Councilors also agreed to postpone the vote to assure each individual the chance to address the council on the items.
“We want to have a stable, peaceful, respectful meeting,” Mayor Jerry Jalbert said.
