BRUNSWICK — Rev. Canon Derek Leslie Bugler, 89, of Brunswick, passed away on July 17, 2014, surrounded by family. He’d had a good innings.

Derek was born in Dorchester, Dorset, England on April 27, 1925. He attended the Dorchester Grammar School before entering the Royal Air Force during World War II. He trained as a navigator on Prince Edward Island and, while on leave, met his future wife “Bette” Day in Waterville, Maine. They were married in 1948, raised two sons and shared 65 years of life and love.

Derek managed hotels, including the DeWitt in Lewiston, before being called to ministry. He graduated from General Theological Seminary in 1964 and was ordained as a priest in the Episcopal Church. He served parishes from Plainfield, CT to Fort Fairfield, ME, and spent 17 years as rector of Grace Episcopal Church in Bath. In his retirement, Derek enjoyed reading and traveling, especially to England.

Derek is survived by two sons, Ian Bugler and Carol Rush of Topsham, and Peter and Jennifer Bugler of Moore, Okla.; a much loved daughter in- law, Judith Bugler of Topsham; a brother, Colin and Valerie Bugler of Hartley Wintney, Hampshire; a brother-in-law, Sanderson Day of Oakland; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
