Damage to a water line in Cumberland Center that caused water outages to about 45 customers on Wednesday morning and early afternoon has been repaired and water services have been restored.

The Portland Water District first reported the damaged water main line around 10:30 a.m. and determined that it was caused by a subcontractor, Shaw Brothers Construction Inc., which was utility doing construction work unrelated to water services in the area of 171 Tuttle Road, said Michelle Clements, a spokeswoman for the water district.

Water service had been restored by the early afternoon, but because workers were still in the area motorists were being asked to avoid the area if possible, Clements said around 1:30 p.m.
