SOUTH PORTLAND – A Scarborough man is determined to raise $15,000 for a charitable organization and has vowed that he won’t leave the rooftop of a South Portland restaurant until he reaches his goal.
Kevin Fitzpatrick’s adventure began on Friday at noon when he set up a tent on the roof of Jimmy the Greek’s restaurant at the Maine Mall in South Portland.
Pete Brown, the program director for STRIVE, a non-profit organization in South Portland that provides services and recreational opportunities to more than 900 children and young adults with disabilities in southern Maine, said that Fitzpatrick raised over $8,500 last year. As of Monday night he had raised just over $10,000 toward his $15,000 goal – which represents STRIVE’s 15th anniversary.
Brown said that Cabela’s, a sporting goods store based in Scarborough, provided Fitzpatrick with a tent and sleeping bag for his rooftop campsite. Fitzpatrick uses a rope to lower a bucket to people who want make a donation. Donations are also being accepted at the restaurant.
