FREEPORT — Freeport police shut down a section of South Freeport Road for several hours Monday after they received a report that a man who was threatening suicide with a gun could be in the vicinity.

Lt. Sue Nourse said the father of Bryan Kennedy, 40, of Falmouth notified authorities around 10:30 a.m. Monday that his son was threatening suicide with a firearm and that he might be headed to the home of his ex-wife, Stephanie Vares, who lives on South Freeport Road.

Nourse said Kennedy arrived at his ex-wife’s home around 3 p.m. Police officers from Freeport, Yarmouth and Brunswick set up a perimeter around Vares’ home, notifying neighbors of a potentially dangerous situation. They also shut down South Freeport Road.

Attempts to contact Kennedy and Vares were unsuccessful. Kennedy and Vares left the home on their own just before 7 p.m. Kennedy was taken into protective custody. He was later taken to Maine Medical Center in Portland for an evaluation.

No one was injured.
