More than $23 million will be invested in 28 regional transportation improvement projects over the next four years, according to the Portland Area Comprehensive Transportation System. The projects will affect 11 southern Maine cities and towns, including Portland, South Portland, Scarborough, Biddeford, Saco and Old Orchard Beach.

John W. Duncan, director of PACTS, identified the regional transportation projects targeted for funding in a press release issued Monday. The improvement projects, which are scheduled to start in 2015 and conclude in 2018, were selected by the organization’s policy committee, he said.

Among the larger projects will be paving a section of Route 1 in Falmouth for $2.6 million; reconstructing Main Street in the Thornton Heights neighborhood of South Portland for $1.2 million; creating two roundabouts in Portland at the intersections near the University of Maine School of Law for $2.8 million; installing four new traffic signals in Westbrook at the Cumberland Mills traffic triangle for $1.2 million; and rebuilding the intersection of Water, Hill and Main streets in Biddeford for a total of $1.2 million.

Other projects include extending the Eastern Trail connection from South Portland into Scarborough for $376,000; making improvements to 120 regional bus stops at a cost of $1.7 million; and paving sections of Saco’s Industrial Park for $1.5 million.

Duncan said that PACTS projects are funded with 75 percent federal monies and a 25 percent local match.
