Over the past few years, we have witnessed a proliferation of Native American correctness. In the national spotlight, there’s been a renewed call for the Washington Redskins to renounce their name. Locally, Scarborough and Sanford high schools, along with other “sensitive” school districts, fell in line and made identity changes.

So what of the city of Portland and the Casco Bay Lines? How have they escaped the shame and outrage? Where is the outcry?

Should not Sagamore Village be renamed, along with several Portland streets? Hey, have you seen what they named the newest ferry in the Casco Bay Lines fleet – Wabanaki?

Is it time that we honor the request of the Native Americans and totally remove all reference to them and their heritage from our lexicon? Oh, yeah, let’s not forget about all those pesky lakes and ponds scattered about the state.

As you read this, I hope you are enjoying the early arrival of Indian (oops, can’t use that word) summer!
