A standoff with police in Farmington ended peacefully Monday afternoon after a suicidal man agreed to meet with police and a mental health counselor.

Around noon, Farmington Police Chief Jack Peck said, someone called the police to report that a suicidal man with a rifle was at a Clover Mill Road home.

Peck said the Maine State Police tactical team was called to the home because of the report of a rifle, and Peck spoke on the phone with the 23-year-old man, whose name is not being released.

The chief said the standoff ended around 3 p.m. when the man agreed to meet with him and a mental health counselor.

“Fortunately, I was able to talk to the gentleman by cellphone and it ended peacefully,” Peck said.

Along with town and state police, the Franklin County Sheriff’s Department, Wilton Police Department and the Maine Warden Service assisted.
