Portland police are seeking the public’s help in the investigation into the sexual assault of a young child by a man who entered an East Bayside apartment early Sunday.

Julian M. Soto, of 39 Greenleaf St., is a person of interest in the case and is wanted for questioning, according to Assistant Chief Vernon Malloch.

A man fled after an adult in the apartment went to investigate noises in the child’s room, police said.

Police learned of the assault when they went to the apartment at 3 a.m. for a report of a burglary.

Malloch said police have been unable to find Soto and they ask that anyone with information about his whereabouts contact police by calling 874-8575. Soto, 25, is described as a light-skinned Hispanic who is 5-foot-8 and weighs about 190 pounds.

To report information anonymously, mobile phone users can text “GOTCHA” plus their message to 274637 (CRIMES) or go to the department’s website at www.portland-police.com and click on the tab for submitting an anonymous tip.

Police said residents in the area should lock all doors and windows and report any suspicious activity to police.
