I agree with Democrat Shenna Bellows’ campaign that Sen. Susan Collins failed to lead in the government shutdown last year.

Collins voted for the Republican bill that tied funding to cutting off health care. She knew it would lead to shutdown, and then she dashed to the center crying for “common sense.”

This is typical. Calling it “moderation,” Collins dithers until the political winds are right, and only then speaks out. This is her form of political mastery, but this is not leadership.

Sen. Collins stood for the shutdown, not against it, when real leadership could have brought real benefit. Instead, she waited for a shining moment and political gain, while Maine and the country suffered.

This record of false leadership shows that Sen. Collins no longer deserves support.
