LONGTIME BOWDOIN COLLEGE head coach Dave Caputi, center, announced that he will step down after this season on Tuesday. Caputi has led the Polar Bears for the past 15 years, and leads his 2-2 squad against Trinity College at home on Saturday.
Caputi is in his 15th season as head coach and brings a current record of 2-2 into Saturday’s contest with Trinity College at Bowdoin’s Whittier Field.
“After a good deal of thought and conversations with (Bowdoin Ashmead White Director of Athletics) Tim Ryan, I have decided that this will be my last season as head football coach at Bowdoin,” said Caputi. “These last 15 years have been very rewarding for me and I have had the opportunity to work with some really great people. I also had — and continue to have — the privilege of working with outstanding student-athletes. I am proud of these students and alumni, and I am grateful for their friendship. I look forward to the chance to do something new. I am excited and focused on our remaining games this season and working with our students and staff in support of our football program.”
Caputi joined the Bowdoin athletic staff in the spring of 2000 after serving as the offensive coordinator for Williams College. Before joining Williams, Caputi served as the quarterbacks and secondary coach for Tufts University from 1985-86. Caputi earned his undergraduate degree in American history at Middlebury College in 1981.
On the gridiron, he was the starting quarterback for a Panthers squad that finished the 1980 season with a 6-1-1 record. In 1994, Caputi earned his Master’s Degree in Education from North Adams State (Mass.) College.
“Dave Caputi has been devoted to the development of well-rounded, highachieving leaders within our football program, and the commitment he consistently demonstrated to our students and staff throughout his time at Bowdoin is greatly appreciated,” said Ryan. “Dave has positively impacted the lives of countless Bowdoin students, both within and outside our football program. We wish Dave well as he moves forward following the conclusion of our season and we will always be grateful for his service to the college.”
A national search will be conducted for Caputi’s replacement at the conclusion of the 2014 season.
