A Maine State Prison inmate who was serving a sentence for manslaughter died Sunday morning at a Rockport hospital, the Maine Department of Corrections said.

Steven Holloway, 51, a former resident of Wilton in Franklin County, died about 6 a.m. at Pen Bay Medical Center, said the department’s spokesman, Scott K. Fish.

Holloway had served about 15 years in prison on a manslaughter conviction. Fish said Holloway had been sentenced to 35 years with all but 20 years suspended – plus six years probation.

After his death, Maine State Police and the state medical examiner’s office were notified. Stephen McCausland, spokesman for the Department of Public Safety, said Holloway’s death is not suspicious.

“He died of cancer,” McCausland said Sunday night. “He had a longstanding illness.”

Holloway was sentenced on Dec. 20, 1999, after entering a conditional plea of guilty to murder. He withdrew his murder plea in 2001 after the Maine Supreme Judicial Court ruled that statements made to detectives could not be used at trial. He subsequently pleaded guilty to manslaughter.

Holloway killed 68-year-old Albert “Sonny” Parker Jr. in 1998 at Parker’s home in Wilton. He used Parker’s hunting rifle to kill his friend.

Fish said that Holloway was scheduled to be released from prison on Oct. 13, 2018.

Fish said Holloway was the sixth or seventh inmate – he could not be more precise Sunday night – to have died this year while under the care of the Department of Corrections. All but one of the inmates who have died in 2014 were incarcerated at the Maine State Prison in Warren.
