The Weather Outside is Frightful?

At least it looks that way for Halloween night, as they are predicting snow. You just never know what you are going to get, which I guess is part of the fun living in the Northeast. One year it snowed, one year it was summertime balmy. We had almost a full week of rainy days this past week, then a gorgeous Saturday. That was a great thing considering the slew of soccer tournaments going on. Some Lake Region teams had three games in a row this past Saturday, and perfect weather for it!

Trunk or Treat

Maybe all you need to do if it’s snowing is stop at Lake Region High School’s Annual Trunk or Treat event. Trunks are decorated and open with costumed characters giving out all kinds of yummy stuff. Trunk or treating starts at 4 p.m. and goes until 6.

Halloween Fun at Peter Rabbit

The kids at Peter Rabbit Pre-School in Naples are getting excited about Halloween! The kids shared what they were going to dress up as at snack time. They can’t wait till the big day! They pretended to be bats again and sang their “Bats Are Sleeping” song each time the lights came on and they “went to sleep.” They are getting good at other Halloween special poems like “Five Little Pumpkins,” “Way Up in an Apple Tree” and “Leaves, Leaves Everywhere.” They rounded out a recent day with night drawings on black paper with many of them really spending some time on their drawings.

Revisiting Field Hockey in the Lake Region

Pauline Webb is leading the way to make Field Hockey a must-do sport here in the Lake Region.

Four years ago, Pauline Webb recognized the declining numbers in the field hockey program at Lake Region Middle School so she jumped right in and started a youth program with the help and support of Beth Latsey, the Casco recreation director. There had been a period of three or four years with no youth program so the area was suffering the consequences. Last summer Pauline applied for an equipment grant with the USA FUNdamental field hockey program. Lake Region Field Hockey was recently awarded this grant from USA Field Hockey, which includes a kit with free sticks, balls, and a Fundamental Field Hockey program booklet with easy to follow practice sessions that volunteers can easily follow to run a youth program in their area. As a recipient of this grant, communities team up with local elite field hockey programs and run clinics to help introduce the sport to the youth and help build the skill level of existing field hockey players.

This past Sunday, Oct. 26, Maine Styx field hockey program (based in Portland) teamed up with LRHS Coach Pauline Webb for a free clinic for new and current players from second to eighth grade. The clinic was held at Lake Region High School with a turnout of 30 players, some playing for the first time, and current players who wanted to work on their skills. A big thank-you is owed to Maine Styx coach Danielle Bishop, and Maine Styx players for dedicating their time to growing the sport in our area.

New Brochure for Naples

Work on a new brochure has been under way since Labor Day with distribution scheduled for next spring. Naples has not had its own brochure for a number of years and there has been a lot of enthusiasm for the new project. Many local businesses have been contacted about the project and there are about two dozen businesses who are placing ads in it. Their participation is greatly appreciated and is making the project possible.

The brochure will have a larger format than originally anticipated due to advertiser support. In addition to ads for local businesses, the brochure will include some information about the town, a map, photos and things to do in our area. It will also promote that Naples is a four-season community for both its residents and visitors. It will be distributed locally as well as at numerous information centers. Work is also expected to be done on a website to further promote Naples as well.

The project is headed by Brenda Leo of the Naples Information Center and Merry Watson of the Naples Historical Society. A limited amount of advertising space is still available. When the project is sold out, they regretfully will not be able to accommodate any additional requests. Craft Sale Update

The Early Bird Craft Sale planned by Merry Watson and the Naples Historical Society for the Naples Town Hall has been cancelled. The Holly Berry Fair is scheduled for the same day, and it’s hugely popular, been around for a long time so most vendors had probably signed up for that or were planning to. Be on the lookout for another such event from the NHS next summer. The date for the Holly Berry Fair is Saturday, Nov. 1, with proceeds going to support the Project Graduation Fund of Lake Region High School.

The Edes Falls Sewing Circle is holding their annual Ho Ho Ho Arts and Crafts Bake Sale on Saturday, Nov. 15, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event takes place at the Edes Falls Community Center located at 319 Edes Falls Road. Also planned are a Chinese auction, and a homemade luncheon for sale, including corn chowder, hot dogs, pies, breads, beans and biscuits. Everything at the sale will be homemade including the hats, mittens, quilts and Afghans lovingly made by the ladies of the group. For more information, contact Priscilla Kyle at 693-4456.

Thanksgiving Comes Early

For most people, the foods served at our traditional Thanksgiving Meal are among their all-time favorites. I know this is true for my family, and I am sure it has to do not only with how delicious everything is, but also the memories made on that holiday. This Saturday, Christ Chapel, 37 Northern Pines Road in Raymond, is offering a chance to enjoy our favorite meal and some new memories. Roast turkey with all the fixings is on the menu and free to the public. The meal is served continuously from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. buffet style. Break bread with your friends or make some new ones and give thanks with your neighbors.

Recreation Basketball

Sign your child up for the Naples Recreation Basketball Program. All registrations are now being done online at sports.bluesombrero.com/naples rec. The cost is $26 per child or $42 per family.
