LAGOS, Nigeria (AP) — The U.S. Embassy says Nigeria has asked the United States to stop training a battalion of Nigerian soldiers, the latest sign of troubled relations between the two countries.
An embassy statement Monday says they “regret the termination of this training” to help Nigeria’s army fight an Islamic uprising.
Nigeria has accused the United States of not doing enough to help it confront the Islamic extremist group, Boko Haram. The disagreement apparently revolves around a U.S. refusal to sell Nigeria helicopter gunships.
Nigerian soldiers are accused of summary executions of civilians and other abuses under a state of emergency in the country’s northeast. U.S. laws prohibit the sales of certain lethal weapons to countries whose military are accused of consistent gross human rights violations.
