MYSTIC, Conn. — A nature center in Mystic has an unusual request. It’s asking the public to donate dead mice.

The Day of New London reports that the Denison Pequotsepos Nature Center is no longer receiving donations of frozen mice from Pfizer and the Charles River Laboratory to feed 20 animals, including owls, eagles and snakes. The two firms donated extra laboratory mice used in research but the donations have recently stopped. The nonprofit now faces a cost of $24,000 a year to buy mice.

The center said its great horned owl eats up to eight mice a day and even more in the winter. Its newest raptor, a red-shouldered hawk with an injured spine-tail that staff is rehabilitating, will eat as many as six mice a day as it starts feeling better.
