The new year for People Plus brings a renewed interest in tackling the “core values” at Brunswick’s popular Senior Community Center, and a new series of Lunch & Learn programs is designed to do just that.
“The focus is to age well.” Executive Director Stacy V. Frizzle explained, “healthy minds and healthy bodies are at the very heart of so much we’re trying to do and bring to this Mid-coast community.”
An “Aging Well” lunch and learn lecture is being planned for the fourth Monday of each month at noon, in 2015, at the center on Union Street. Attendees should bring their own sandwich; chips, drinks and desserts are provided by People Plus. Each “Aging Well” lecture will close with a question-and-answer session and a preview of the next month.
The “Aging Well” series will include discussions on hearing, vision, oral hygiene (teeth), skin care, nutrition, staying active, living with arthritis, and more.
The series kicks off on Jan. 26 at noon with Mary Marino of Mary’s Affordable Hearing Aids. Marino opens the series with a program titled, “Can you hear me now?” discussing common maladies and age-related disorders that can lead to hearing loss, as well as a step-by-step discussion of how to test for hearing difficulties.
Marino will talk in depth about how to live with hearing loss including telephones, televisions, audio devices, etc., as well as what hearing aid devices are available and what might be the best for every situation.
She currently offers free hearing screenings once a month at the People Plus Center, at 11 a.m. on the third Thursday during the popular People Plus Lunch & Connections meals.
February’s Aging Well lecture will feature Don Miskall, a member of the Harpswell Recreation Committee, bringing his engaging personality to discuss the best ways to stay active outside in our area as the weather improves in spring.
Gulf of Maine will be on hand with several books from local authors featuring the area’s best hiking trails and other books appropriate to the discussion.
Miskall will also discuss the prep work and details for his upcoming “through hike” of the Appalachian Trail. He leaves in March. The lecture begins at noon on Monday, Feb. 23.
Check the People Plus website at www.peopleplusmaine.org or call the center at 729-0757 for more details on this or any events taking place in 2015.
