Early Sunday, law enforcement officers from Maine will again make the somber trip to New York City to pay their respects at the funeral of a slain police officer – this time that of Wenjian Liu.

Liu and fellow Officer Rafael Ramos were ambushed and shot to death as they sat in their patrol car in Brooklyn on Dec. 20. The gunman then fatally shot himself.

Dozens of Maine police officers attended Ramos’ funeral last Saturday. Ramos’ oldest son attends Bowdoin College in Brunswick.

About 20 police officers from a number of departments in Maine will board a bus in Scarborough to attend Liu’s funeral on Sunday, according to a post on the Scarborough Police Department’s Facebook page. The officers will represent Maine law enforcement as they offer support to fellow officers in the New York City Police Department and to the Liu family, the post said.

Thousands of officers from across the country are expected to travel to New York to attend Liu’s funeral, as they did for the funeral for Ramos.
