BELGRADE — Douglas E. Small, 82, passed away peacefully into the arms of our Lord on Dec. 30, 2014, at the USVA Medical Center at Togus.

He was born in Wiscasset on Dec. 27, 1932, the son of Wayland and Arlene (Folsom) Small. He grew up in Oakland, graduating from Williams High School in 1951. He earned a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering in 1955 from Rennselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, N.Y.

After completing ROTC, Douglas was commissioned as Ensign in the U.S. Navy Reserves, and served on the aircraft carrier WASP for two years. He then served in the U.S. Naval Reserves for 26 years, retiring as Captain.

Doug was employed at Bath Iron Works as Facilities Manager, retiring in March 1995.

Doug was an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed spending time with his family, both at home and at camp. He was very interested in genealogy and actively pursued developing his family tree. Doug was a member of the Corpus Christie Parish. He was a great husband, father, and great-grandfather and will be missed by all.

Surviving are his wife Carol (Dwyer) Small, who he married on Nov. 5, 1955, in Watervliet, N.Y. He is also survived by his children, Denise Small Howell and husband Stephen of Orrington, Karen Small Pelletier and husband Kirk of Topsham, and David Douglas Small and wife Susan (Ripley) of Prescott Valley, Ariz.; seven grandchildren, Amber (Howell )Poulin and husband Christopher, Ashleigh Howell, Alyssa Howell, Matthew Pelletier, Zachary Small, Joshua Small and Jacob Small; two step grandchildren, Dustin Gurley and wife Samantha, and Carson Carpenter; three greatgrandchildren, Gabriel Poulin, Julianna Pagliaroli and Giovanni Pagliaroli; brotherin law Jack Dwyer and wife Martha (Monroe) of Stephentown, N.Y.; and several nieces, and nephews. Doug enjoyed a warm relationship with Gary Small and wife Phyllis, Charles Small and wife Denise and Linda Kozminski and husband Mike.

Doug was predeceased by his brother, Robert Wayland Small and wife Rosemary.

Friends are invited to visit from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 16, at Lawry Brothers Wheeler, 26 Church St., Oakland. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 17, at Notre Dame Church, 112 Silver St., Waterville. Spring burial will be at the Riverside Cemetery in Farmington.
