Cheverus’ Holman a Gaziano finalist
Cheverus’ Zordan Holman is a finalist for the Frank J. Gaziano Memorial Defensive Lineman Award, to be handed out Jan. 24 in Augusta. Holman is joined as a finalist by Orono’s Seamus McKaig and Windham’s Hunter Bowen. Deering’s Matthew Krusiec and Portland’s Jeremiah Israel-Copeland were semifinalists. Portland’s Dominic DiMillo was a semifinalist for the Offensive Lineman Award. The finalists for that honor are Messalonskee’s Jacob Doyon, Thornton Academy’s Benjamin Zuke and Windham’s Zach Davis. The award winners receive a $5,000 scholarship and the runners-up receive $1,000 scholarships.
Portland kids reach states in hoop shoot contest
Several Portland kids were triumphant at last weekend’s Hoop Shoot district finals. Sadie Armstrong was the winner in the girls’ 8-9 division. Isabel Dawson won the girls’ 12-13 division and Henry Westphal took the boys’ 12-13 title. The three winners advance to the state finals Jan. 25 in Augusta.
SMCC men start second semester on a high note
The Southern Maine Community College men’s basketball team opened the new year with a pair of home victories, 79-68, over Northern Essex and 102-82 over St. Joseph’s of Vermont. In the first win, Edwin Gonzalez went off for 24 points. Tyheem Simon had 18 points against St. Joe’s. The Seawolves (14-2 overall, 9-0 in the Yankee Small College Conference) host U. Maine-Augusta Wednesday, welcome Eastern Maine CC Saturday and play host to Northern Maine CC Sunday and Monday. The women fell to 9-7 (6-3 in conference) after home losses to Briarcliffe of New York (84-83) and St. Joe’s of Vermont (71-58). Amira Jones had 22 points versus Briarcliffe and finished with 13 against St. Joe’s. SMCC is home against U. Maine-Augusta Wednesday, host Eastern Maine CC Saturday and CCRI Sunday.
Western Maine umpire classes upcoming
The Western Maine Baseball Umpires Association is holding baseball umpire certification classes for schools and leagues above the Little League level in Cumberland and York counties Sunday mornings beginning Feb. 8. FMI, 653-8736 or wmbua@maine.rr.com.
