The University of New England’s Portland Art Gallery presents “A Gateless Garden: Quotes by Maine Women Writers,” beginning Tuesday.

An opening reception will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the art gallery, 716 Stevens Ave. in Portland.

The exhibition features 53 quotations by Maine women writers, edited by Liza Bakewell, director of Maine Women Write. The quotes are paired with black-and-white images by Maine photographer Kerry Michaels.

The exhibit is based on the book “A Gateless Garden: Quotes by Maine Women Writers,” by Bakewell and Michaels. The book contains 100 quotations and 100 photographs.

All of the women writers featured have connections to Maine, including Harriet Beecher Stowe, Louise Bogan, Edna St. Vincent Millay and Rachel Carson.

The exhibit runs through April 12. Bakewell and Michaels will give a presentation at 5 p.m. on Feb. 26. Jennifer Tuttle, faculty director of the Maine Women Writers Collection, and Dorothy Healy, chair of literature and health at UNE, will give a lecture at 5 p.m. on March 12. The exhibition and related events are all free.

Hours are 1 to 4 p.m. Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday; and 1 to 7 p.m. Thursday; une.edu/artgallery.
