SOUTH PORTLAND — Adelaide Lillian Curran, 89, of Harriet Street, died Jan. 19 at the Springbrook Nursing Center in Westbrook, with her family by her side.

She was born in South Portland on June 7, 1925, the daughter of Walter G. and Hazel Mae Haggett Coffen. She attended local schools and graduated from South Portland High School, Class of 1943. She continued her education at the North Carolina School of Dress Design.

In 1957 she married Martin C. Curran, and together they raised their family in South Portland.

Adelaide was self-employed as a dressmaker for many years. She made many brides’ dreams come true with her one-of-a-kind wedding gowns, in which she specialized. Her hobby, in her free time, was making Raggedy Ann and Raggedy Andy dolls. Her family estimates that in her lifetime she made over 7,500 dolls for children to enjoy.

She was member of Senior Friends in Florida and a member of the Elks Lodge Auxiliary. She also enjoyed attending dances and spending time on the golf course. But her greatest love was the time she spent surrounded by her children and grandchildren.

Curran was predeceased by her husband in 1981, and a brother, Raymond Coffen.

She is survived by a daughter, Marie Cathleen and husband, Robert Gerardin, of Glastonbury, Connecticut; two sons, Gregory Martin and wife, Coralie Curran, of South Portland, and Sean P. and wife, Betsy Curran, of Gorham; and six grandchildren, Elsa, Henry, Kelly and Jackson Curran, and Nichole and Michela Gerardin.

Visiting hours and a service were held Jan. 22 at Conroy-Tully Crawford South Portland Chapel. Burial will be in the spring at Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Augusta.
