A Yarmouth woman and her baby escaped serious injury Thursday morning when her car overturned on Interstate 295 in South Portland.

Danielle Niles, 30, lost control of her car when she reached over to turn on the car’s heater, said Stephen McCausland, spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety. Her car, going south at the time, rolled over, coming to rest on its roof. Niles’ 7-month-old baby remained in the car seat.

McCausland said Niles and her child were taken to Maine Medical Center in Portland for observation. An accumulation of snow in the interstate’s median helped to cushion the impact, McCausland said.

The north and southbound passing lanes were closed to traffic for about 30 minutes after the crash, which was reported around 10:45 a.m.
