The York County Sheriff’s Office didn’t have to cast a very wide net to find the suspect in the armed robbery of the Big Apple store in Arundel last year.

Sheriff William King Jr. said Shane Jones, 26, of Biddeford has been in the York County Jail since his arrest in November on charges that he ran over and killed his mother with his pickup truck. Jones is charged with manslaughter, reckless conduct with a motor vehicle and leaving the scene of a fatal accident.

Now, he faces a new felony charge of robbery. He is scheduled to make his initial court appearance April 7, according to King.

“York County Sheriff’s Office investigators did not have to go very far to locate Jones because he is being held at the York County Jail,” King said Wednesday in a press release.

The sheriff’s office said a masked man entered the Big Apple convenience store at 1120 Portland Road in Arundel on the night of Nov. 7, showed a gun and demanded cash. The clerk, who was alone in the store, emptied the cash draw and the robber ran off.

King said his office did “an extensive investigation that included forensic analysis of evidence recovered at the scene of the robbery,” and that evidence implicated Jones.

Detective Mathieu Nadeau interviewed Jones earlier this year. During that interview, Jones confessed to the armed robbery, King said in the press release.

Biddeford police say Jones ran over his mother on Nov. 23, just 16 days after the robbery, after an argument over money at the family’s home on Brackett Street in Biddeford.

According to a police affidavit, Kimberly Jones, 49, followed her son and his girlfriend out of the home to his truck, where she stood by the passenger window.

Jones’ sister, Shawna, who lives at the house, told police that when he backed up, she heard a thud and saw her mother lying face down in the driveway before Shane Jones sped away.

Jones was arrested a few days later. He pleaded not guilty to all three charges last month in York County Superior Court.
