BERLIN — Soren Kam, a former SS officer wanted for war crimes in his native Denmark, has died in Germany. He was 93.
The Simon Wiesenthal Center counted Kam among its top targets for the killing of an anti-Nazi newspaper editor in Copenhagen in 1943.
The center’s top Nazi hunter, Efraim Zuroff, told The Associated Press Tuesday that Kam had been “totally unrepentant” for his actions.
Zuroff said Kam benefited from a Nazi-era law granting him German citizenship, and a German court’s decision characterizing his actions as manslaughter.
This prevented Kam from being extradited in what Zuroff called “a total travesty of justice.”
Kam died March 23 in Kempten, Bavaria, according to a death notice published Saturday in the Kemptener Zeitung.
Kam’s wife died March 7. They are survived by their children.
