A foster parent from Belfast is being held in the Two Bridges Regional Jail in Wiscasset on charges that he sexually abused a 9-year-old foster child.

Belfast Police Chief Michael McFadden confirmed in an email Wednesday that Lawrence D. Oxton, 71, of Pitcher Road in Belfast faces sex abuse charges.

Oxton turned himself in to police last week and was arraigned Friday in Belfast District Court. He was being held at the jail Wednesday night on $10,000 cash bail. He is charged with gross sexual assault and unlawful sexual contact.

McFadden said Belfast police began investigating Oxton in mid-March after receiving a referral from the Maine Department of Health and Human Services. McFadden said the child told another caregiver about having inappropriate contact.

Oxton has been a foster parent for 15 years.
