LEBANON — Maine State Police say a mother who was distracted by her crying child caused a three-vehicle accident in Lebanon on Thursday afternoon that sent four people to local hospitals with minor injuries.

Trooper Kyle Wells said the Sanford woman, whose name was unavailable, will not be charged. She crashed into a stopped vehicle at Route 202 and Union School Road when she turned to check on her 18-month-old child, who was crying in the back seat.

The 20-year-old woman and her child complained of pain and were taken to Frisbie Memorial Hospital in Rochester, New Hampshire, for observation.

A 67-year-old man and woman who were in the car struck by the woman were taken to the Southern Maine Health Care in Sanford with minor injuries.

The force of the collision sent the couple’s car into a pickup truck that was also waiting to turn at the intersection. The two men inside the truck were not hurt.

The accident was reported at 3:53 p.m. Wells said travel along Route 202 was reduced to one lane for about 45 minutes while crews removed the damaged vehicles.
