Noel Gallagher’s article Wednesday about the Portland school budget was very informative (“With tiny turnout, Portland voters pass school budget”), but it would have been more useful to have been able to read it before I went to the polls.

I was one of the 970 voters in Portland who turned out for the school budget vote Tuesday. The article was a bit “tsk-tsk” about the low voter turnout, but the only way I knew there was a vote that day was that I happened to be flipping channels during breakfast, when WCSH had a brief mention of it.

I then looked through the previous three days of the Press Herald and did not find any mention of it. I also searched on my PPH E-subscription – nothing. The only thing I could find was an online article from the School Department.

I guess I should be happy when my vote counts for 1/970 of the decision, instead of 1/54,000. I did vote “yes,” just to support the people who made the effort to put the budget together. It must be a thankless task.

Traditionally, isn’t the No. 1 job of a newspaper to let the people know about their opportunities to vote?
