SIDNEY — Two people were injured Sunday evening, one of them seriously, after the driver of a motorcycle suffered a medical event on Interstate 95, causing him to lose control.
Michael Tracy and his wife, Cynthia Tracy, both of Waldoboro, were not wearing helmets and were both ejected from the motorcycle, a 2010 Harley Davidson, said State Police Trooper Diane Vance. The accident was reported near mile marker 120 southbound at around 5:30 p.m. by a witness.
Traffic on the interstate was closed while state police responded and a LifeFlight helicopter was flown in to take Michael Tracy, 59, to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor. He has life-threatening injuries, Vance said. She would not comment further on the medical event.
Vance also said she was unsure whether Tracy’s condition was related more to the medical event or to the trauma from the motorcycle crash. “It’s probably a little bit of both,” she said. “It’s hard to tell, but it’s probably a combination of both the medical event and the trauma of being ejected from the motorcycle.”
Speed and alcohol are not being looked at as factors in the crash.
Vance said that Tracy and his wife, 56, had been “out and about” for the day and were headed home at the time of the crash.
Cynthia Tracy was taken to MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta. Her injuries were not life-threatening.
Traffic on the interstate was reduced to one lane until about 8:45 p.m. as police reconstructed the accident. The Waterville and Sidney fire departments were also dispatched to the scene.
