Times Record File PhotoParkview Adventist Medical Center announced this morning it had filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, and it would be closing its emergency department and acute inpatient care this week — on Thursday, June 18.

Parkview Adventist Medical Center is filing for bankruptcy — and its emergency department and acute inpatient care will close this week.

The emergency department and acute inpatient care will cease operation at 8 p.m. Thursday, June 18.

According to an announcement shortly after 9:30 a.m. today, Parkview has filed a petition for relief under Chapter 11 of the United States Bankruptcy Code with the United States Bankruptcy Court in Portland. Chapter 11 of the Bankruptcy Code is designed to provide companies with the time and opportunity to reorganize, including by restructuring their debts or by obtaining new investment capital.

Parkview has presented the court with a proposed pre-packaged bankruptcy plan that would include entering into a transaction with Mid Coast Health Services of Brunswick. The proposed transaction includes the purchase of certain assets, the assumption of certain liabilities and the preservation of the Adventist mission on the Parkview campus.

According to the press release, the common vision proposed by Parkview Adventist Medical Center and Mid Coast Health Services is designed to ensure the continued availability of high quality, locally-delivered care to the patients of the Bath-Brunswick-Topsham communities. This approach will also preserve all full and part-time jobs at Parkview.

“After years of change in the healthcare industry and increasing financial challenges, Parkview has reached a point where it can no longer serve its mission as a stand-alone hospital and is now seeking a new opportunity with Mid Coast Hospital to advance a common vision to serve the local care needs of Midcoast Maine long into the future,” said Bob Cundiff, chairperson of the Parkview Board of Directors, in a prepared statement.

Upon court approval, the press release stated, the shared approach would bring together two local healthcare organizations to sustain and strengthen the healthcare system in the Bath-Brunswick-Topsham community. Together, the Mid Coast-Parkview Health System would establish an integrated model that would provide patients with high quality, affordable healthcare close to home and for generations to come.

“While so many Maine communities continue to grapple with the loss of local healthcare options, our combined strength and spirit of partnership will serve as a living example of how local community organizations can come together to solve difficult problems and preserve convenient access to quality care,” said Barbara Reinertsen, chairperson of the Mid Coast Board of Directors, in a prepared statement.

Built on a foundation of primary care and ambulatory services, and anchored by prevention and wellness programs, the vision of Mid Coast-Parkview Health System will be to create a sustainable healthcare system for the community, and preserve the mission of two local organizations, as well as valuable jobs.

According to the press release, Mid Coast-Parkview Health System will consolidate inpatient and emergency services on the Mid Coast campus at Cook’s Corner, and utilize the Parkview campus for physician practices, a walk-in clinic, as well as radiology, laboratory, ambulatory testing and surgery, oncology, hematology, infusion services, physical, occupational and speech therapy services, and community health and wellness programs.

Those experiencing a medical emergency should call 911. Local emergency services will be provided at Mid Coast Hospital at 123 Medical Center Drive, near Cook’s Corner in Brunswick.

For non-emergency medical needs, patients can visit the Walk-In Clinic at Parkview (open daily 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.) or the Mid Coast Walk-In Clinic downtown at Brunswick Station (open 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday).
