Several Portland organizations will hold a gathering Monday in response to the fatal shooting of nine members of the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church on Wednesday night in Charleston, South Carolina.

The city of Portland, the NAACP Portland Branch, Portland’s Racial Justice Congress, Green Memorial AME Zion Church and Williams Temple Church of God in Christ are planning the event, “Lift Every Voice and Sing: A Multi-faith Gathering for Remembrance and Peace,” which will be held from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at Merrill Auditorium.

All are welcome at the gathering, which will honor the black people killed in Charleston and call for an end to violence and racism. The suspected gunman, 21-year-old Dylann Roof, is white.

“When acts of violence like this occur, we must speak out against it, and stand together in saying it has no place in our community and in our country,” Mayor Michael Brennan said in a statement. “I hope everyone will consider joining us Monday night.”

In addition to Brennan, acting City Manager Michael Sauschuck, incoming City Manager Jon Jennings and other city officials will attend, City Hall spokeswoman Jessica Grondin said.
