Raymond Beach is closed because of high levels of E. coli bacteria.

Town officials say the Sebago Lake beach was closed to the public after E. coli levels tested outside of the safe range. The beach will reopen once levels return to an acceptable level.

The beach, located off of Roosevelt Trail/Route 302, has been closed before because of contamination, including an extended shutdown in the summer of 2010 after the water tested high for the bacteria. At that time, town employees discovered dirty diapers, hypodermic needs and human feces on the beach.

People who ingest E. coli by swallowing water while swimming can experience stomach cramps and diarrhea.
