Rockland police are asking for the public’s help in identifying the person who stole a Confederate battle flag from a parked pickup truck Tuesday evening.

Police posted a video of the theft, taken from inside a vehicle by an eyewitness, on the police department’s Facebook page Thursday afternoon. The theft occurred around 7 p.m. at Harbor Park in Rockland.

The five-second video shows a person, apparently a woman, walk up to the pickup truck’s bed and wrestle the flag from a wooden pole. The person, wearing baggy suspender-type shorts and a baseball cap, then walks a few feet to their own car before putting the flag in the car.

After the video was posted, the police department posted another Facebook message asking that “comments stay on topic. If you can help us identify the person, great. … We don’t take political sides. We’re simply investigating a theft.”

Rockland police said they will hide or delete inappropriate comments.
