A South Portland man has pleaded guilty to illegal possession of a gun in connection with what police called a “road rage” incident in Scarborough in May.

Sean Johnson, 33, pleaded guilty Thursday to being a felon in possession of a firearm, U.S. Attorney Thomas Delahanty said in a news release Friday.

Police said Johnson was driving a red Jeep Grand Cherokee on May 23 when he pulled alongside another vehicle at a traffic light at the intersection of Payne Road and the Maine Turnpike connector in Scarborough and fired a handgun aimed at the other vehicle. The bullet missed the two occupants of the other vehicle as it traveled through the passenger-side window and lodged in the driver-side door, police said.

After a witness called Scarborough police, officers found the Jeep parked a short distance away and arrested Johnson in some nearby woods. A trained dog helped police find a Glock 9 mm semi-automatic pistol buried under leaves near the Jeep.

Johnson was prohibited from possessing a firearm because of a 2013 felony drug trafficking conviction in Maine.

Johnson had originally been charged with driving to endanger, reckless conduct with a firearm, violation of probation and being a prohibited person in possession of a firearm.

The guilty plea to firearm possession by a felon means Johnson faces up to 10 years in prison, a $250,000 fine and three years of supervised release. No sentencing date has been set.
