Bridgton selectmen this week confirmed the police chief in Walpole, Massachusetts, as the town’s new police chief.

Richard B. Stillman, a 38-year law enforcement veteran, was hired to replace Kevin Schofield, who was selected to be Windham’s new police chief.

Stillman was promoted to chief in Walpole in 2002 and before that worked as the department’s executive lieutenant, a position equivalent to a deputy chief in Maine, said acting Police Chief Jerry Hinton.

Stillman’s position in Walpole ends today, Friday, and his first day on the job in Bridgton will be July 27, Hinton said.

Stillman was hired by Bridgton Town Manager Robert Peabody Jr. and was confirmed 5-0 by the selectmen on Tuesday.

Stillman is familiar with the town, having summered on Moose Pond as a youth, Hinton said.

Stillman holds a bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice from Northeastern University and a master’s degree from Boston University, according to the Walpole website. He is a graduate of the 180th Session of the FBI’s National Academy.

Walpole has 39 full-time officers and a budget of $4.56 million.

Bridgton has six full-time officers in addition to the chief and five reserve officers, according to the department’s website.
