PORTLAND — Portland is home to a successful semi-pro football team whose roster is stocked with former high school and college standouts.

The Southern Maine Raging Bulls, in their 18th season, play in the six-team Northern Division of the New England Football League’s top (AAA) conference with the North Shore Generals, Lowell Nor’Easter, Boston Bandits, Rhode Island Wardogs and Northeast Natives. Last year, the Bulls finished first in their division and made it all the way to the league championship game.

In their season opener, the Raging Bulls were nipped by the North Shore Generals, 32-27, in Lynn, Massachusetts. Last week at home, Southern Maine claimed victory by a 28-0 score over Lowell. On Saturday night, they host the Boston Bandits at Deering High’s Memorial Field in Portland at 7 p.m.

After two games, the Bulls (1-1) lead the league in scoring with 55 points, while yielding 32. Raging Bulls quarterback Alexis Colon tops the league with six touchdown passes, three of them to rookie wide receiver Junior Brown and two to Jacob Alexander. Running back Phil Warren, who played at Brunswick High and The University of Buffalo, has run for two scores. On defense, Lamir Whetsone is tied for the league lead with three interceptions. For Boston (1-1, 28-35) Chris Conroy is the league leader with two successful field goals.

NEFL teams play a 10-game regular-season schedule running through the end of September. Playoffs then ensue for several weeks.
