The Boy Scouts of America are to be commended for permitting adults who are gay – at long, long last – to become leaders.
But have they given even 1 ounce of thought as to what lessons they were teaching their Scouts all along who had joined when the Boy Scouts would not accept kids who were gay?
“The kids who are gay are not as good as we are; they don’t have the same worth as those of us who are straight.”
Later, when those adults who were gay were denied the opportunity to volunteer as Boy Scout troop leaders, what was the unspoken and daily lesson that was taught?
“We won’t accept gay men as volunteer leaders because they do not have the same worth as straight men.”
It has been a powerful lesson that the young Scouts were learning all these years.
And what about the men who will be applying for volunteer leader positions in troops that will be permitted to reject them because they are gay?
We might as well go back in time, saying, “Colored not permitted. After all, those Negroes just aren’t like the rest of us.” Remember?
