Becca Archer scored from Charlotte Noyes with 18 seconds remaining in the first overtime Wednesday as Cheverus downed Westbrook 2-1 in an SMAA field hockey opener.

Wednesday was the opening day of the season for high school field hockey teams throughout the region.

After a scoreless first half, Hannah Abbot scored the first goal for the Stags off of a rebound.

Danielle Breuning put in a rebound to tie it with 12:47 left in regulation.

Kimberly Goddard stopped 12 shots for the Blue Blazes. Deidre Sanborn and Kat Kane combined for seven saves for Cheverus.

THORNTON ACADEMY 4, DEERING 0: Libby Pomerleau scored a pair of second-half goals for the Golden Trojans at Portland.

Goals by Isabella Robinson and Emma Dutremble gave Thornton Academy a 2-0 halftime lead.

Lillian Frager stopped seven shots for Deering. Isabella Capozza made four saves for the Trojans.

YARMOUTH 6, LAKE REGION 0: Abby McDowell and Eliza Lunt each had two goals for the Clippers in a game at Yarmouth.

McDowell scored the first two goals from Brianna Morrill and Sophia McGrath, and Lunt folllowed with two unassisted goals for Yarmouth.

Morrill also set up Ally MacLeod, and Maggie Gunville assisted on the final goal by Emilie Martin.

Tori Messina made four saves for Yarmouth. Katherine Springer stopped 21 shots for the Lakers.

BONNY EAGLE 1, WINDHAM 0: Natalie Bushey converted a penalty corner to lead the Scots at Standish.

Dani Tardiff finished with 15 saves for Windham. Ashlyn Wintle had 11 for the shutout.

SANFORD 1, MASSABESIC 0: Kayleigh Cote scored with 16.6 seconds remaining in the first half as the Spartans won at Waterboro.

Kelley Wescott made 10 saves for Massabesic; Amber Singleton stopped all eight shots she faced for Sanford.

PORTLAND 3, NOBLE 0: Lauren McIntyre scored all three of her goals in the second half as the Bulldogs pulled away at North Berwick.

McIntyre’s unassisted goals opened up a game that was scoreless at halftime.

Gianna Gaudet stopped all six shots she faced for Portland. Marcie LaRiccia made 12 saves for Noble.

FRYEBURG ACADEMY 4, GREELY 0: Nicki Thurston had two goals to lead the Raiders at Fryeburg.

Thurston scored the third goal of the first half from Taylor Kruger, then converted a penalty stroke in the second.

Bridget Tweedie scored from Rya Davis and Lexi Charles had an unassisted goal in the first half.

Bridget Fahey made one save for Fryeburg. Lizzie Brown stopped 12 shots for Greely.

SOUTH PORTLAND 1, GORHAM 0: Bonge Lako scored on a breakaway with 3:35 remaining in double overtime as the Red Riots won at Gorham.

Grace Chitam finished with 13 saves for South Portland. Nicole Walls had five for Gorham.

NORTH YARMOUTH ACADEMY 7, OLD ORCHARD BEACH 0: MacKenzie Sangster had two goals and an assist for the Panthers at Yarmouth.

Amber Rose added a pair of assists for NYA, which received goals from six players.

Celina Ouellette stopped 12 shots for Old Orchard. Savannah Shaw made three saves for the Panthers.

SKOWHEGAN 11, BREWER 0: Julia Steeves had five goals and as assist as the Indians won at Skowhegan.

Cassidy Clement chipped in with three goals and an assist, and Brooke Michonski, Abby Stevens and Haley Thebarge also scored.

DIRIGO 1, WINTHROP 0: Sabrina Daoud scored for the Cougars at Dixfield.
