CUMBERLAND — Greely High had the lead but couldn’t seem to break free from Yarmouth’s near constant offensive attack.

That is until Rangers senior Jocelyn Mitiguy broke free – twice.

Mitiguy scored her second and third goals of the game in a 66-second span in the latter part of the second half to provide a four-goal cushion en route to Tuesday night’s 6-3 girls’ soccer victory.

The scoring plays were set up by good through passes from the midfield by Izzy Hutnak and Ellie Schad.

All three of Mitiguy’s goals and one by Hutnak in the first minute of the second half came in one-on-one situations with Yarmouth keeper Lydia Guay.

“I don’t think we rely on breakaways but we definitely use our speed to an advantage against the defenders,” Mitiguy said. “I think we have all kinds of different scoring opportunities but today it was just a few breakaways.”

Greely improved to 2-0 and Yarmouth dipped to 1-1.

“It’s the beginning of a wonderful season,” Greely Coach Josh Muscadin said. “I think every team we play is going to be like that. We have a long way to go. We have a lot of work to do. This is not the end. This is just the beginning of a beautiful relationship.”

Both teams showed plenty of offensive ability.

Rangers freshman Anna DeWolfe scored twice in the first half and also showed a gritty toughness, particularly in some hard-fought first-half battles with Yarmouth’s Sara D’Appolonia.

Yarmouth’s goals came from Katie Clemmer to tie the game 1-1; Olivia Feeley on a header off a D’Appolonia corner kick to tie the score at 2-2, and Clemmer with 4:06 to play to finish the scoring.

Greely goalie Courtney Sullivan made 20 saves. Lydia Guay had four saves for Yarmouth.

Sullivan is a forward by trade, filling in for injured starting keeper Maddie Cyr. She showed quick reactions on several hard shots.

“Last year Maddie Cyr got hurt probably halfway through the season so I went in for a week or two,” Sullivan said. “(Muscadin) hasn’t found a backup yet. So this year Maddie’s hurt again and I’m in until she’s back.”

After Hutnak’s goal gave Greely a 4-2 lead, Yarmouth had a huge territorial edge. Greely’s defense, led by Kelsey Otley, did a good job of keeping Yarmouth’s attack on the perimeter, though it did lead to several dangerous corner kick opportunities. One of D’Appolonia’s services glanced off the crossbar.

“We had some really good opportunities but they just made the best of their opportunities,” Yarmouth Coach Rich Smith said. “They have a couple of really good goal scorers with a lot of speed so some adjustments are going to have to be made.”

Yarmouth probably lost more than a game.

In the first half, Ella Antolini had her nose bloodied in a midfield collision. Smith said Antolini was taken for X-rays at halftime “for her nose and we’re not sure if she broke it.”

Late in the second half, with Greely up 6-2, midfielder Abby Condon was also injured. The play took place along the sideline opposite the teams’ benches. Greely defender Susannah Jacobson received a yellow card on the play.

“They think Abby might have broke her ankle. She was in a lot of pain,” Smith said.

“We just hope their player recovers quickly and it’s not severe,” Muscadin said. “You hate to see something like that happening to kids.”
