The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration says up to $10 million is available this year as part an effort to help coastal communities and to rebuild fish stocks.
Officials say the Saltonstall-Kennedy Grants Program is focusing on rebuilding fish stocks, maintaining and restoring healthy ocean and coastal ecosystems, and boosting working waterfront communities.
Focus areas include aquaculture, fishery data collection, socio-economic research, and techniques for reducing bycatch.
President Dwight Eisenhower signed the Saltonstall-Kennedy Act into law in July 1954. It was authored by then Massachusetts Sens. Leverett Saltonstall and John F. Kennedy to promote and market domestic seafood.
