A 28-year-old woman sustained serious injuries when the vehicle she was riding in crashed into a utility pole on Route 35 in Standish on Wednesday, leaving the vehicle draped with live power lines and forcing police to shut down the road.

It “took some time to remove the passenger due to the active power lines down in the area,” said Capt. Don Goulet of the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office in a prepared statement.

He said Talisha Goodine-Mitchell of Westbrook was taken to Maine Medical Center in Portland with critical injuries. Her condition was unavailable late Wednesday night, according to a hospital spokeswoman.

The driver, Michael Leavitt, 28, of Raymond, was not injured, Goulet said. The crash occurred just before 4 p.m. in the area of 647 Chadbourne Road, part of Route 35.

Route 35 remained closed between Route 237 and Whites Bridge Road for more than four hours, finally reopening around 8:30 p.m.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
