CAPE ELIZABETH — Frederick C. Emery Jr., 67, of Cape Elizabeth, died Sept. 4 at Gorham House after a gallant battle with ALS.

Emery was born Nov. 7, 1947, in Bangor, the oldest son of Frederick C. and Mary M. Emery.

He graduated from Bangor High School in 1965, and from Colby College in 1969. After serving in the U.S. Army for two years, he went on to earn a law degree from Cornell Law School in 1974.

Emery began his legal career as a clerk for Judge John F. O’Mara in Rochester, New York. In 1975, he joined the Monroe County Public Defender’s Office in Rochester, then moved in 1982 to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of New York.

In 1989, he returned to Maine as an assistant U.S. attorney for the District of Maine in Portland, where he remained until his retirement in 2012. During his career, he was active in many areas of federal prosecution, including drug enforcement, fraud, tax evasion and bankruptcy.

Emery was a lifelong amateur athlete, playing varsity sports in high school and college, competing in softball leagues in Portland, and coaching baseball teams in Cape Elizabeth. He also loved exploring the Maine coast, particularly the Mount Desert area, and was a generous supporter of Friends of Acadia.

He was a faithful supporter of the Portland Symphony Orchestra, attending its Tuesday Night Classical concerts for many years. He also enjoyed dining at local restaurants, caring for his home, and being a warm and gracious host there to family and friends.

Emery was predeceased by his parents and by his brother-in-law, Russel Ross, of Cape Elizabeth.

Emery is survived by his daughter, Baye Emery Larsen, her husband, Michael, of Darien, Connecticut, and her mother, Alicia Ritts Orrick, of Greenwich, Connecticut; his grandchildren, Chase, Lilly and Eloise Larsen, of Darien, Connecticut; his siblings, Joan Ross, of Yarmouth, James Emery, of Northampton, Massachusetts, David Emery, of Freeport, and Susan Emery, of Stetson; his nephew, Arnold Ross, and his family, of Woburn, Massachusetts; and many cousins.

He is also survived by the “love of his life,” Carolyn Mowers, of Cape Elizabeth; her children, Scott Farley, of Cadillac, Michigan, and Jennifer Mowers, of Cape Elizabeth; and her grandchildren, Brett, Ben, Bryan and Audrina.

An informal celebration of Emery’s life will be held Saturday, Oct. 3, from 2-4 p.m., at the Hobbs Hospitality Center, 230 Cottage Road, South Portland. Burial will be at a later date in the family plot in Lamoine.

The family wishes to express heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Gorham House and at LifeChoice Hospice for their compassion and care. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to these organizations.
