A write-in candidate for the District 4 seat on the Freeport Town Council has emerged. Jennifer Worthy announced her candidacy last week to represent District 4, which consists largely of North Freeport, where she sits on the board of directors of the newly formed Wardtown Home Co-Op.

When the Sept. 9 deadline came for returning nomination papers for the Nov. 3 municipal election, there were no Town Council candidates to succeed Andy Wellen, who decided not to seek re-election from Ward 4. It marked the first time in decades that a Freeport Town Council position had gone uncontested.

Worthy soon stepped forward.

”If elected, I will bring an open mind and a studious approach to making decisions,” Worthy said in an email to the Tri-Town Weekly. “I am a small business supporter and believe in the strength of community with growth that will sustain us.”

In a Town Council at-large race, Chairwoman Melanie Sachs will defend her seat against Doreen Mae Christ, who works in the inspections/codes enforcement officer for the city of Portland.

Chairman Nelson Larkens and fellow incumbent John Morang, along with challenger Jeremy Clough, are candidates for two positions on the Regional School Unit 5 Board of Directors.

On the Freeport Sewer District, four candidates are vying for three, three-year seats and two candidates are vying for one, one-year seat.
