Andy McDermott, 31, co-owns Black Point Surf Shop in Scarborough. The 4-year-old shop offers surf lessons, rentals and board repairs. It also houses McDermott Shapes, a business owned by McDermott and his brother, Ryan, that specializes in custom-designed surfboards and stand-up paddleboards. “I love seeing people right before and right after surfing,” said McDermott, of Freeport. “It’s really fun to be able to share that with people.” Despite the perception that surfing is a warm-weather sport, many Maine enthusiasts surf during cold-weather months when the swells are bigger.
